We found our way to our destination, a trailer park called Steelman Estates, which had been virtually wiped out on May 20th. Our church sent us with their blessings, prayers, and nearly five thousand dollars in donation funds to use to bless the people of this area.

Most of the clean-up was finished, so members of our team focused on building storage sheds during the week we were there.
It was a great week- filled with laughter, sunshine, mud, rain, hard work, ministry opportunities, and joy as we served our Lord, Jesus Christ! There were even a few tears as we said our goodbyes. I now I will not soon forget the friends we made there in Shawnee.
Don't you love it when a book can do that?
In chapter 7- "Learn to Be Successful at Success"- Mr. Acuff is talking about success, and how your dream can impact the world around you more than you know. He states: "…as a mom or dad, your dream decisions will greatly impact the lives of your children."

I had to pause and think about how my decisions, especially my passion for performing, have affected my boys. There are positives and negatives. On the positive side, I get to share experiences with them, and they get to see their dad succeed at something he loves and enjoys. They may even find inspiration in what I do.
The negative? I miss out on spending time with them. I miss special days or trips because I'm involved in a show, or I'm away somewhere instead of at home. This bums me out, and I miss them. There has to be balance. I have to be 'home' when I'm home, and 'there' when I'm there.

He also writes about how success can make one arrogant. I know I'm pretty good, but I don't ever want my God-given talents and gifts to cause me to sin and forget that without His strength, I'm nothing. Thankfully, I have plenty of people in my life who keep me in line.

He was off leash, which is usually ok, but today he chose to bolt. Bad dog! The good news is that they were able to chase him down and catch him. The bad news? My wife was having chest pains because they had to chase him down and catch him! Bad. Dog. He now must be walked at all times on a leash, at least until we can trust him again.

Mr. Bergerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09872179924852474816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7367130940733010013.post-6175920596583304652013-02-11T14:43:00.001-08:002013-02-11T14:43:41.810-08:00I'm back... ShiTzu's are fun & other stuff. It's been a long time since I have written on this particular blog site. Forgot the password, forgot the blog, dog ate my computer, etc., etc.
I've been reading the book "Quitter" by Jon Acuff, and have been inspired to blog again. He's a great author, and I'm really enjoying the book. Just ordered "Stuff Christians Like"as well.
Don't know if anyone will actually read this, but here goes!
Shi Tzu's are funny little dogs. We just adopted one from a breeder in Joliet. He's a good little boy- if we can call male dogs boys- and has really found a place in the hearts of my family. He does this funny little spin move when he's excited, or he wants a treat, or he just went poop outside. It's like he's chasing his tail, but never quite catches it. I can't say for certain, since I'm not a dog psychologist, but I think this is his version of a happy dance. He also drinks out of a bottle that's intended for a guinea pig. Apparently that's what show dogs do so they don't get their beards wet. A wet beard causes them to do the 'shake it off' move. My boys call this the 'slobber slinger', because if you're in the general vicinity, you will get wet.

We also had a visitor last week. You see, a while back our family became a 'Safe Family'. This means we can take in children who are in need of a safe place to live for a short time, while their parents work out their 'stuff' and are in a position to take them back. Our little girl was with us back in the fall, and she came last week just to visit. Isn't that great? This is the first time we have been able to keep in touch with a family, and have been able to help them on an ongoing basis. My wife posted a list of the things that this particular family needed, and friends stepped up and provided! Well, God did it, but He used friends to make it happen! It's so great to see how He meets needs in such a tangible way. All glory be to Him!

Have a great week! Thanks for reading.
I spent a relaxing day in Galena, just reading, studying scripture, spending time in prayer, and taking advantage of the quiet. It was refreshing and helped me get me head on just a bit straighter. I also took a few hours and walked around downtown Galena. Hap and I had gone there a few years ago, so it was good to be reminded of places we went the last time we were there.
Meanwhile, Hap was having a tough time at home with the boys. Both boys have head colds, and so does mommy, so no one was sleeping well. It's a prairie area in Ringwood, IL, and was once filled with glaciers. It was great to see our boys enjoy new sights, like animal poop, bugs, rocks, crazy looking dragon flies who appeared to be mating, and wild plants that reached out and grabbed you as you walked by. We hiked up a small hill, and when we reached the top, the view was simply spectacular. We could see for miles, and the cool breeze was quite refreshing, especially for those of us who had been carrying a 40 pound boy on their shoulders.
Bible verses rushed to mind as we surveyed His creation, and Happi even sang the doxology. We had a snack of red and green grapes, took many pictures, and decided it was time to head back. I'm sure Hap will post pictures on her blog.
Even though the walk back to the van was tiring- did I mention I was carrying a 40 lb. little tank with me?- we really enjoyed our day at Glacial Park. We plan to go back and explore more in the future. What a great way to learn about God's handy-work.
Have a great Lord's day.Mr. Bergerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09872179924852474816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7367130940733010013.post-40428956581307970792008-08-15T07:02:00.000-07:002008-08-15T07:37:17.684-07:00A little perspective, please...Ok, so it's been a long, long time since I've blogged. The summer has gone by so quickly, and I just don't sit down to write often enough. (Can 'never' be considered not often enough? I'm not sure.)
Anyway- about perspective...
I auditioned for a commercial this week, thanks to my buddy Jimbo, who owns a studio in Chicago. It was a thirty second spot for Midwest Lottery, a combined effort of Kansas and Iowa. I had a great time recording the jingle, and was hopeful that I'd get it. There were three of us in contention, and we were referred to as singers A, B, and C. I was singer A, since I was first to record at the studio. Well, I received the call yesterday that they chose singer C, but they really liked my version, too. I guess you could say I got the Silver medal. I think singer C's name was 'Phelps" or something like that... I'll post the audio, if you'd like to hear it.
Needless to say, I was a bit bummed that I didn't get the gig, since it paid over $500., and I had plans already in motion for that money. (Sorry honey- no shiny new dishwasher this week...). I spent part of the day in a funk, and was not very motivated to do anything. It seems silly now, but I guess it affected me more than I thought it would.
Then the call came...
Our good friend Charity called my wife to tell us that her brother has been given only 2-4 months to live. He has been battling small cell lung cancer, and just received the bad news from his doctors. That means that, unless God heals him, which He certainly can do, in less than six months his kids will lose their daddy, and his wife will lose her husband.

And I was having a bad day because I didn't get a 30- second commercial about gambling. God forgive me for being so self-centered. He certainly has a way of putting things into perspective, doesn't He?

Please pray for Dave and His family, and for our friend Charity. They need supernatural healing and grace right now, and we believe that can only come from one source- Almighty God.

Mr. Bergerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09872179924852474816noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7367130940733010013.post-84313296405136889172008-04-18T15:14:00.000-07:002008-04-18T15:22:36.366-07:00Rumble in the nightLast night, and about 4:30 a.m., we experiences tremors from an earthquake! I was awakened from my sleep to the sound of banging, and I think the bed was shaking a bit as well. Our closet doors were hitting together at a very steady tempo, and I woke my wife to see if she heard it. Here's how the conversation went: (All in a soft hushed whisper, mind you.)
I said "Honey... do you hear that?"
She said "What?"
I said "That."
She said "What?"
Me: "The doors"
She: "What doors?"
Me: "The closet doors!"

I reached out and touched the doors to stop them from banging, and when I let go, the tremor had stopped. So, we went back to sleep, not thinking much of it. Imagine our surprise to find out that an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude went through the midwest over night! Praise be to God that noone was hurt, and that He protected us.

Signs of things to come, according to the Bible.Mr. Bergerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09872179924852474816noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7367130940733010013.post-21313311077343660242008-03-31T09:43:00.000-07:002008-03-31T09:46:24.337-07:00Rainy Day PraiseHello- It's been a while, so I thouht I'd write a quick entry.
It is pouring down rain right now, and I have to got out into it in a few minutes to go to a meeting. Guess who moved most of it, one 40 lb. bag at a time... Me! Thankfully, my back held out ok, and my chiropractor didn't yell at me.

I'm also singing on the worship team at church this weekend. It is good to sing praises to the Lord!

I'm still writing my final project for my Master's degree in Music Education, so I've got that to do this weekend as well.

Busy, busy, busy!

My beautful wife is having a recital Sunday afternoon for her students, and she has convinced me to sing "The Prayer" with her. I love to sing with her, so it will be fun! She's a great music teacher and I know her students will do well.

Have a great weekend, and a blessed week!Mr. Bergerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09872179924852474816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7367130940733010013.post-71158137299843096322007-03-09T09:08:00.000-08:002007-03-09T09:10:38.997-08:00Well, I guess it's time I had a blog, too.Just wanted to send my son a message on his site, and I ended up creating my own blog!
